Why Do Joints Crack? The Pop Often Comes From a Rapid Pressure Change

The familiar pop from cracking a knuckle often comes from a rapid pressure change inside the joint.

It is not usually one bone smashing into another.

Many joints contain synovial fluid

Movable joints are surrounded by a capsule.

Inside is synovial fluid, which helps lubricate the surfaces as they move.

Gases are dissolved in that fluid.

When the joint is pulled apart slightly, the pressure inside the capsule can drop very quickly.

What makes the popping sound?

As pressure changes, a small gas-filled cavity can form within the synovial fluid.

The rapid formation of that cavity is associated with the familiar cracking sound.

This process is often called cavitation.

The details have been studied with medical imaging because, apparently, science also wanted to know what your brother was doing with his knuckles at the dinner table.

Why can you not crack the same knuckle again immediately?

After a joint cracks, conditions inside the capsule need time to return to their earlier state.

After enough time passes, it can crack again.

No.

Tendons and ligaments can move over nearby structures and create snapping or clicking sounds.

So the pop does not usually mean your bones were grinding together and it does not mean a bubble exploded like a tiny balloon.

It is most often a fast pressure-driven change inside a lubricated joint.

It may be harmless.

It may also annoy everyone within twenty feet.
