It also limits oxygen exposure.
Oxygen can contribute to changes in fats and flavors over time.
The sealed bag is therefore protecting both texture and quality.
What is the gas inside a chip bag?
The space inside the bag is useful.
It helps cushion the chips from crushing.
Manufacturers also commonly use gas that helps protect the product from oxygen.
The bag is not half-empty because the company forgot to add chips.
At least, not entirely.
Can stale chips become crisp again?
Gentle heating can sometimes drive off absorbed moisture and restore some crunch.
How well that works depends on the food and how long it has been exposed.
But the basic problem remains the same.
The chips gained water from the air.
So an open bag of chips does not usually go soft because the chips are drying out.
They are doing the opposite.
