Why Do We Have Earwax? It Is Part of Your Ear’s Cleaning System

Earwax looks like something your body forgot to clean up, but it is actually part of the cleaning system.

The medical name for earwax is cerumen. It forms in the ear canal from secretions produced by glands mixed with shed skin cells and other material. The result helps protect the delicate skin leading toward the eardrum.

What does earwax do?

Earwax helps trap dust, dirt, small particles, and microbes before they travel deeper into the ear canal. Its oily components also help keep the skin from drying, cracking, and becoming irritated.

Cerumen has properties that can help limit the growth of some bacteria and fungi too.

So earwax is part moisturizer, part debris trap, and part security guard. Its public relations department simply never recovered from the appearance problem.

How do ears clean themselves?

The skin lining the ear canal slowly migrates outward. Jaw movement from talking and chewing can help move old wax and trapped debris toward the opening.

Eventually, small amounts dry, flake away, or wash off during normal bathing.

This self-cleaning system is why most people do not need to dig inside the ear canal.

Why can cotton swabs make things worse?

A cotton swab may remove a little wax near the entrance, but pushing it deeper can pack wax farther into the canal.

That can create an impaction, irritate the skin, or in extreme cases injure the eardrum.

The familiar advice not to put objects into your ear canal exists because the eardrum is sitting at the end of a narrow tunnel. This is not an area where aggressive home excavation has a particularly good safety record.

Why do some people have more earwax than others?

Earwax production varies. Genetics, age, ear-canal shape, skin conditions, hearing aids, earbuds, and individual gland activity can all affect how wax accumulates.

There are also genetically influenced wet and dry types of earwax. Variants of the ABCC11 gene are strongly associated with which type a person produces.

Neither type means the ear is cleaner or dirtier. It is simply biological variation.

When does earwax become a problem?

Wax can become impacted and block the ear canal. Symptoms may include reduced hearing, a plugged feeling, discomfort, itching, ringing, or sometimes dizziness.

People who use hearing aids or insert devices into the ears may be more likely to have wax pushed inward.

If you suspect an impaction, especially with pain, drainage, a history of ear surgery, or a possible eardrum problem, it is safer to get appropriate medical guidance than to start pouring or poking things into the canal.

Do you need to clean visible earwax?

You can gently clean the outside of the ear and the entrance to the canal. The deeper canal usually handles itself.

Earwax only becomes “dirty” in the social sense that people do not like seeing it. Biologically, it is exactly where it is supposed to be.
